Por CBTM
After a huge fight with the Netherlands' city of Rotedam, The Brazilian Table Tennis Confederation (CBTM) convinced ITTF that Rio de Janeiro has all the facilities needed to host the 2008 Veteran World Championship.
- Although the European majority I was claimed by the Official Jury Committee. Now we hope to achieve the inscription record and receive more than 4 thousand players and 3 thousand partners and family members between May 26th and 31st in Rio, in 2008. - says CBTM president Alaor Azevedo.
Three cities send their proposal to ITTF, but two weeks before the host city was chosen, France's city of Nice declined. So it was only between Rio de Janeiro and Roterdam. Both proposal presentations was made on May 2nd during the World Championship, in Shangai, China. Minutes after the presentation, the Official Committee chose Rio de Janeiro to be the host city of the Event.
The brazilian proposal was presented by CBTM president, Alaor Azevedo. Netherlands' proposal was presented by a complete delegation, composed by: Bettina Vriesekoop, European Individual and Double Championship in 1982, Roterdam's major and a lot of Netherlands National Federation members.
This will be the first time that Brazil will receive this kind of competition, but the second time that a World event will be hosted in Latin America (the first one was the 2003 Junior World Championship in Chile). There will be more than 150 umpires, 7 thousand meters of special floorings, 140 game tables and a lot of other impressive numbers in Riocentro Convention Pavilion.
